Green and Woodland Burials

An alternative option to a traditional burial which has become increasingly popular in recent years, is to have a Green or Woodland Burial.

The Natural Burial Ground serving this area is the Southdowns Natural Burial Site which is situated at the Sustainability Centre in East Meon, within the South Downs Natural Park. The full postal address is

All graves are dug and filled in by hand, and families are welcome to help should they so wish. Trees and benches act as memorials to those buried there. Although grave markers or head stones are not permitted, when a burial takes place the co-ordinates are recorded so that families can know the final resting place of their loved one. All coffins must be constructed from natural and completely biodegradable materials

The South Downs Natural Burial Site is run by the charity Earthworks Trust, and all profits go to support the wider educational work of The Sustainability Centre.

If you would like the whole funeral service to be conducted at the Natural Burial Site, there is a service room available, which is a timber framed shelter, accommodating approximately 50 people. Catering facilities are also available on site should you wish to provide refreshments after the service.
